HOW TO REPAIR YOUR TELEPHONE LINES ALL BY YOURSELF

A telephone line is a single-user circuit on a telephone communication system. It is the physical wire that connects the user telephone gadget to the communication network and a single telephone number is reserved for the user by the communication network for billing purposes. The role of Telephone lines is to deliver landline telephone service to the user.

Telephone lines were first used in 1878 as the Bell Telephone Company began to use two-wire circuits from each user's telephone to end offices which performed any necessary electrical switching to allow voice signals to be transmitted to more distant telephones. These wires were typically copper, although aluminium can sometimes be used, and they were carried in balanced pairs separated by a distance of about 25 cm on poles above the ground and later as twisted pair cables.

In Modern times telephone lines may run underground and can either carry analog / digital signals to the exchange or may have a device that converts the analog signal to digital for transmission on a carrier system. Often the customer end of that wire pair is connected to a data access arrangement; the telephone company end of that wire pair is connected to a telephone hybrid.

In most cases, two copper wires for each telephone line run from a home or other small building to a local telephone exchange. There is a central junction box for the building where the wires that go to telephone jacks throughout the building and wires that go to the exchange meet and can be connected in different configurations depending upon the Telecommunications network.

Telephone lines are mostly associated with landlines, and as reliable as this old form of telephone can be, its wiring has seen better days because chances are high that your house in which is installed is over 16 years old, therefore a couple of issues would have arisen such as phone line crackling, buzzing or simply your phone line not working but the internet seems OK with no dial tone.

These are common problems with many phone lines which may be caused as a result of corrosion with your phone points due to water penetration, sun damage especially if you are located in coastal areas and poor jumper connections by previous telephone technicians that may have worked on it especially during it initial installation or from the different and multiple technicians on it over the years. You should follow these steps in repairing your telephone lines

SAFETY

No matter what you do, your safety should be your main priority because even though telephone lines run with low voltage, you must still be careful as there can still be a chance of electrical shock especially if you are working in a damp area. And it only takes a small current of electricity to kill or injure someone especially people with Heart Issues.

TROUBLESHOOTING

This is a very important step in repairing your telephone lines as you have to discover the problem affecting the phone before you can proffer solutions to it. Make sure you unplug your phone or any other device such as a fax machine from the telephone line, then check for any visible breaks or punctures on the telephone wires and cable.

If the Fault is not there, you can remove the cover or cover plate on the wall socket enclosure, check the wires coming into the enclosure to be sure they're connected correctly and not faulty at all. You should check and make sure that the red incoming telephone cable is attached to the terminal for the red wire feeding the socket. The green wire should be attached similarly to the matching colour of green wire.

If the issue is not a result of faulty or wrong wiring, then you should check the demarcation jack of the exterior telephone junction box. Try plugging your telephone into one of the phone jacks in the junction box. If there is a service tone (dial tone) that sounds normal, the problem lies somewhere inside the home but If you have noise on the line, dead air, or a buzzing sound, it's the phone company's problem to fix.

SOLUTION

If you find any visibly damaged wiring or cable, then you repair it by cutting off the damaged part of the wire and then replacing it with a new telephone cable and it will work as new and if it is either the red or green incoming cable that is in either the enclosed wall socket or the ones attached to the terminal that has been damaged or punctured, you can repair it by stripping off the insulation covering the conductor of the respective cable, do use pliers to twist the bare conductor of each colour that matches each particular cable that needs repair and then covers the connection with Electrician's Tape.

Your knowledge of the procedure above will help in solving the telephone problems you might have such as:

  • When you notice the phone is buzzing, Then you should check for proper wire colour connection and make sure two wrong colours are not matched together and if they are, you should separate them and match them with their respective colours

  • When there is no sound on the Line(Dead Air), then you should check the phone jack to make sure the wires are not touching each other as this is caused mostly by bare wires touching each other. If that is the case, wrap up the bare wire with an electrician's Tape

  • If the phone line is static, then the wire and phone jack cover should be checked for moisture and be cleaned up if it is wet. This mostly happens in coastal areas.
